Well, it has certainly been an adventure taking the idea for a fun miniatures game from concept to market. Again last weekend, while running demo games at the local miniatures convention, I was reminded how much people seem to enjoy the rules and want a set for themselves – I know I would if I were them. Unfortunately, the adventure is proving to perhaps be a level or two ahead of where I am at. But have no fear, I am a sucker for a challenge (why I am, niether my wife or I have ever been able to figure out though).
As I write this, I am diligently working with various printers to try and get the Combat Cards ready to sell. It sounds easy enough, but as a small press company it is very challenging to find anyone who understands what you are trying to do, and can do it in the quantities you need (we aren’t quite ready for a 5000+ deck run). Fortunately, I have found some vendors who are willing to work with us to see it through to completion.
That being said, it has been no piece-of-cake to get to this point. The Cards have gone through numerous format changes to meet the printers’ requirements, I have had to learn several layout programs in some depth to get a product at least resembling a nice appearance, there have been numerous apparent successes that were dashed with setbacks, and I even had to refrain from choking on my morning Mountain Dew one day when a quote came in at $96 per deck cost! While it would be nice, I really don’t think we will be able to sell a lot of those $200 decks to anyone…
The journey continues with what I hope will be a satisfying conclusion here very soon. I know that sometime in the future all of this struggle will probably be a fond (and maybe even humorous) memory. At least I hope so.
Until then though, it is back to work with the hard hat on!
Stay tuned for more…
