CHAIN REACTION – WWII STYLE
The other night we played a few games of WWII skirmish action using the
Chain Reaction 2.0 rules from
Two Hour Wargames. We tweaked them a bit to suit our tastes (
using a deck of cards for turn activations instead of rolling) but otherwise used the rules as is.
Nick was a squad of German panzer grenadiers with a light machine gun, and several sub-machine guns, while I was a squad of American paratroopers equipped with (
lowly
) M1 Garand rifles.
The first game did not go well for the 'ol Americans. It was the night of the Normandy air-drops and everybody’s forces were scattered all over the table. The objective was simply re-group your forces safely whilst taking out as many of your opponents as possible. The dice were not with the Americans, and the German squad leader went on a schnapps induced killing spree taking out everything he encountered – including the American squad leader!
The second game the Americans faired a little better. Both sides were conducting a diversionary attack into a village which had already seen considerable action (
hence the burning hulks all over the table!). The key to wining was to thin out the other guy’s force before he thinned yours. After some quick and bloody actions – including the wounding of two paratroopers trying to rescue a third – the Americans were finally able to force the Germans to withdraw.
I hope to get in some more skirmish games soon – this time with some vehicles too as I am painting up paratrooper bazookas to deal with them.
Until next time…
Cheers!
