SCALING UP – AGAIN
I got a chance to play another
Blitzkrieg Commander game in 15mm recently. The setting was Normandy 1944, and Todd and I comprised a German Kampfgruppe tasked with retaking a vital crossroads by securing a large farmhouse situated at the intersection. Nick had the unenviable task of playing the infantry heavy Americans – fresh off the beaches – responsible for repulsing the German counterattack.
The Americans were in hasty defensive positions, dug in and ready for the attack, with a company of infantry supported by an under strength Sherman tank platoon. The Germans were attacking with two depleted infantry companies, a cobbled together Panther tank company and a pair of assault guns.
The assault guns on the left flank made slow but steady progress for the first couple of turns, but the forces in the center and on the right flank went nuts. The German infantry rapidly advanced on the designated farmhouse – with a steady barrage of artillery reigning down on it, suppressing the troops inside – while the German armor made and end run to flank the Americans.

The Panther maneuver was risky, but proved beneficial as two out the three Shermans were caught and destroyed in their hiding places. The German infantry continued to press the attack over the next few turns, making good gains, but the stubborn American forces held tough. On the left flank (
Todd’s forces for the record) became bogged down, with one of his assault guns actually retreating from heavy machine gun fire!

We did have to call the game before we were able to reach a final conclusion, but it admittedly didn’t look good for the ol’doughboys. A few more turns and the intersection would have fallen into German hands.
In any event, a good time was had by all (
especially me as my dice were on fire
). I can’t wait for the next game!
Until next time…
Cheers!
