A NEW SCENARIO
A couple of weeks ago we began trying a “new” approach to our historical games – using scenarios more reflective of the historical realities (
admittedly many of us already prefer this method, but there are some who are not yet convinced that this is a viable way to design fun games - we are still working on them
)
For this
Blitzkrieg Commander WWII game, a Russian spearhead had been cut off by a German counterattack and was now dug in on a hill at the far end of the table. The Russian commander was tasked with reaching the isolated unit while still holding the hill. The German commander was between the cut off troops and the relief force and was ordered to destroy the force on the hill, thus preventing a link up.
The game proved really exciting – the Russians tried a daring dash up the road on the right flank, only to have their armored company shredded by Tiger I’s and Elephants. Not to be deterred, the Russians pressed on with the remnant of their armor and their hordes of infantry.
Because the German commander expected a more direct assault on his positions, he had placed his limited armored forces in a good defensive stance, but a bad position from which to adjust to the Russian flanking maneuver.
In the end, the Russians were able to outflank the Germans and link up with their lost unit. They even managed to keep possession of the hill as well – thus a Russian victory! All in all the players had a great time, enjoyed the scenario and are looking forward to playing it again.
Enjoy the pictures!
Until next time…
Cheers!
