MORE OF THE WORLD AROUND US

MODERN MICRO ARMOR GROWS

Our regular Saturday modern micro armor group has slowly been adding new members. Just recently we caught them teaching some new ~~cult members~~ folks the rules. In addition, they had a couple of spectators watching – who I suspect were really just trying to decide what nationality/era they wanted to jump in with, but they wouldn’t readily admit to it.

THE RUSSIANS ATTACK

This week’s battle was centered around a US intervention in Georgia (purely a what-if scenario) with an emphasis on air operations. Primarily to teach that aspect of the Cold War Commander rules to the new players.

TALKING STRATEGY

HERE COME THE AMERICANS - MAYBE... THEY NEED SOME DICE ROLLS FIRST.

From the action on the tabletop, it appears from this simulation that any American interventions would need to pay heed to the two following points:

1] Don’t give the cream of the American forces to the new guy, and

2] Don’t plan on any good dice rolls. J

As always though, everyone seemed to have a great time (judging from the hoots, hollers & laughter) and dates were set for the next events. It would be pretty neat if the group continued to grow to where there would be multiple tables being run on a Saturday…

HERE COME THE 'ARD BOYZ AGAIN...

‘ARD BOYZ 40K TOURNAMENT ‘08

Just a couple of weekends ago we hosted another of Games Workshop’s 40K ‘Ard Boyz Tournaments at the shop. What a tournament it turned out to be! We had 16 players who did battle that day – most of which had wonderfully painted armies, even though they were not required to as part of the tournament.

Everyone seemed to have a great time – which is especially amazing given that there was no scoring in the tournament for sportsmanship! I couldn’t have been more pleased (and proud as a member of the gaming community) of the collegiality of the participants. At one point I actually heard the following exchange:

“…can I still shoot them?”

“It’s a friendly game, so go ahead.”

This said with a lot of real prizes on the line! Don’t get me wrong, we had some very good players in the tournament (and some rather cutthroat massacres) but the friendliness between players during the games and away from the table was wonderful.

AN ORC BATTLEWAGON

Before the tournament, we weren’t sure if we would want to host another of these ‘Ard Boyz Tournaments (in part due to some shenanigans pulled by GW), but after seeing the turnout (15 of 16 players were shop regulars) as well as the enthusiasm they had for the game and the tournament I don’t know that we have a choice. We were also talked into hosting another Village Games 40K Rogue Trader tournament later this fall, so keep an eye out for more information on that.

A CHAOS DEFILER

Throughout the day I snapped as many pictures as I could, which turned out to be way too many for a single post. So, I will be spreading them across a couple of blog entries so none are wasted. I will try and give credit to the army’s owner where known, but please forgive me as the memory fails you sometimes when you are sifting through loads of gaming photos.

ARGH, THERE BE PIRATES AHEAD...

PLYING THE HIGH SEAS

Recently a few of the regulars got in a couple of games of sailing ships using the Pirates of the Caribbean ships from Wizkids, but a set of home-grown rules developed by them. The islands were lovingly crafted by one of our resident expert terrain makers Chris L.

I don’t know exactly what the sides were, or who one, but it appeared to be a fairly sizeable battle. As always, everyone seemed to have a good time – and if the frenetic pace of sales on the Pirates ships is any indication, there are sure to be more games on the high seas ahead.
