I managed to get in another game of BKC (
Blitzkrieg Commander) last Saturday. What a game it was!
I was the Germans, with an infantry company supported by a pair of Pak 40 ATG's and a single Wespe battery. Brad S. was the Americans with 2 infantry companies supported by 3 batteries of M7 Priests, a pair of recon M5 Stuarts and a platoon of M4 Sherman tanks. We played in 15mm scale using the "Exploitation" scenario out of the book (
American attack vs. German defense).
Initially the Americans took every advatage of their command rolls. They advanced rapidly on all fronts. They outflanked, suppressed and eventually knocked out my Pak 40's and managed to run the Shermans right down the center of the village the Germans were trying to defend.
The Germans once again had horrible command rolls (
is there a class I can sign up for somewhere on how to roll even remotely close to average???) and were forced to make due with opportunities afforded them.
The Germans had brilliantly situated their artillery observer in the top story of a three story building, but unfortunately the accuracy (
and thus effectiveness) of the barrages left much to be desired. The real saving grace was the infantry platoons on either German flank managing to hold out long enough to allow the troops in the middle to lay waste to the Sherman platoon (
welcome to the land of Panzerschrecks & Fausts!).
Despite the German successes, it still looked as thought it would be a sure loss for the Germans. Especially once the they were pushed to their breakpoint. However, the Germans were able to make the command roll to stay in the fight (
a true miracle!!!) and inflict further casualties on the Americans. This forced the Americans to their breakpoint.
After a couple more turns of both sides making their command rolls to stay and fight, the Americans finally failed their's and decided to retire from the battlefield to fight another day. This gave the Germans a minor victory for the battle! They had denied the Americans their major objective - a push through the German lines to occupy the third of the table closest to the German edge!
This game was a real nail biter right down to the end - we even had cheering sections around the table for each side! It just goes to show you tenacity, determination and frequent dice changes can sometimes pay off - oh, and maybe a touch of timely luck...
In any event it was a great game, and as always Brad was an excellent, fun opponent! I just can't say enough how much I enjoy every time I play BKC - win or lose! I believe we are going to play it again this Thursday as well, so if you are interested in seeing it played or learning more about the game stop by and check it out.
Well, until next time...
Cheers!
